Electrical Testing
I recently had a call from a customer saying that they were having issue with the fuse box tripping out intermittently. This type of fault can be one of the hardest to diagnose as the fault might only appear in a test meter when it trips out. If you're not there at that exact time it can be really difficult to pin point.
Luckily enough for me on the day I arrived the fault was constantly showing and we were unable to switch the RCD into the on position without it tripping out. This is usually what happens, the fault constantly gets worse to a point where the circuit in question just won’t stay on.
I managed to narrow the fault down to a few different cables between various sockets on the downstairs ring main. I suggested to the customer that we should replace these cables by lift the flooring and running in new.
At this point the reason why it was happening was still uncertain as it could of been many things. When lifting the floor boards I noticed that there was chew marks on the wires exposing the inner cores.
This is a sure sign of rodents wether it be mice or rats. A lot of wiring under the floor is just laying along the ground and in puddles of water, if the rodents chew the cables exposing the conductors in these areas it would cause a short between the circuits tripping out at the board.
